It has been tough around here in the Mortellaro household since Thanksgiving week. The little darlings caught a stomach bug and so of course Mommy and Daddy got it too. The following week, Influenza A hit us hard and I really am fervently praying that Daddy won’t get it.
It is never easy taking care of sick kids while being sick as well. It got me thinking… Why do I have kids so close in age?…….

Don’t get me wrong. I love my kids with my whole being (more than anything), but sometimes when it is just so overwhelmingly exhausting, I can’t help but ask WHY? To remind me, I wrote down the 7 glorious (and not so glorious) reasons as to why I have my children so close in age and stop myself from questioning once and for all.
I am a late-bloomer (If that is how you call it). I never got involved with someone by choice, and when I finally decided to get into a relationship, I was already 32 years old. 3 months into the relationship, we got engaged. 2 months after the engagement, I got pregnant. Oh I was SO happy and overjoyed (though really scared) when it happened. At last, I am going to be a mother.
Age is the number 1 factor why we wanted our kids so close in age. Research has shown that “fertility in women is known to decline steadily with age”.The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists talks more about female age-related fertility decline on their website if you want to check it out. An older woman can encounter more risks whilst pregnant compared to her younger counterpart also. Therefore it is wise for us to get pregnant again while before I reach a certain age.
Besides, all the women in my family all experienced menopause prematurely (and by prematurely, I mean 43).
We can never deny the fact that our siblings are the first ever friends we meet in this journey called life. Envision your kids enjoying the luxury of long-lasting friendships starting at the age of 1 and a half. Isn’t it heartwarming? The way I see it with my kids, their sibling bond is undeniably stronger. My first born is turning 3 tomorrow and my second born is turning 18 months in a week or so, but they have already shown everyone how they are so ready to stick up for each other any day at any time.
My little boy is only 5-6 lbs heavier than my little girl, so I can just buy a size that fits them both and don’t have to worry about a thing. It doesn’t just apply to diapers, you know. My little boy has some neutral clothing pieces that my little girl wears as well. Brilliant, right?
The kids’ crib did not get assembled until my baby girl turned 6 months old. It was not because my husband and I were too lazy to do it, but it was because we did not find it necessary to do so. My little boy co-sleeps with us and takes a nap on his own in a big boy bed. We decided to finally put the crib together so we could use it.
For toys, I believe that buying a brand spanking new set when you practically have brand new toys from your first kid is a waste of money. Call me a bad momma, but my little girl is still the happiest little girl even when she is playing with a tractor and a monster truck rather than a doll.
Having babies is one of the most nerve-wracking experiences a person can undergo in a lifetime. Taking care of tiny humans is no joke. We could try to arm ourselves with a lot of know-how, yet we still couldn’t be half the expert that we wanted to be at parenting our own children. At least, with children so close in age, everything you have learned first-hand is still fresh enough that you do not have to reacquaint yourself with the “how-tos”.
Sleep schedules? My kids take the much-needed nap at the same time. They are used to taking a 3-hour long nap and I won’t even complain. Potty-training? I must admit that my little boy regressed when my little girl came into the picture. For a good 2 months there, he was waking up with a dry diaper and he was only 14 months then. He was on his way to being potty-trained when he decided he needed mommy to change his diapers again. I don’t mind. I know it will be easier the next time because he will have someone to do it with. I guess my little boy won’t have a choice when I start potty-training my little girl in a week.
How about outgrowing their menu at the same time? I am just glad I have them so close. They eat the same kinds of food. When one sees that the other eating something, she/he tries to take a bite of it too. One disadvantage is when one decides she/he doesn’t like something and so the other will just flat out hate that specific thing too.
With all honesty, I never feel any pressure on losing the weight I gained since I had my first born. I always tell myself, “It’s okay, Donna. You had 2 babies back to back. Losing weight should be the last thing on your mind these days, right?” Well, I guess losing weight will never be an issue in the very near future. We plan to have 2 more babies back to back in a year. What do you think? (Ha!)
While there are a lot of disadvantages in having kids so close in age, we can’t deny the benefits that come with it. I never once regret I have my kids so close in age (Except this last 2 weeks when we were battling with the debilitating tummy flu and Influenza A!). In fact, I will do it again.
